Karen Fili, President and CEO of UUSA, was recently recognized by Profiles in Diversity Journal as a trailblazer in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) for her work in the nuclear industry.
Fili is one of the few female CEOs in the nuclear industry where women make up less than 25% of the workforce worldwide, according to the World Nuclear Organization. She has over 35 years of experience in commercial nuclear power and holds a Master of Business Administration degree from Mississippi College, and a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from Mississippi State University. Over the past four years, she has served as a leader to over 230 employees at UUSA, driving the organization towards a sustainable future while navigating the challenges of an unprecedented global pandemic with a level head.
Each year, Profiles in Diversity Journal accepts nominations for women who are confident, authentic forward thinkers. Nominees are also high-performing, purpose-driven leaders who create value for other women and for the organizations where they contribute their talents.
Fili’s focus on inclusion and diversity, as well as her knowledge, experience and leadership style are what make her outstanding. She lives by the notion that “every conversation with the team, a colleague, co-worker, boss or employee is an experience for that person and creates beliefs about [them] as a person.”
Additionally, Fili’s personal touch makes her an exceptional leader. Her natural inclination is to pave the way for others. She continues to help advance opportunities in STEM for people from all walks of life through her commitment and active support of inclusion and diversity efforts, and STEM-focused programs and initiatives.
“Mentoring young females in STEM is one way we can help ensure the next generation feels more empowered, seen and capable than we did during our careers,” said Fili. “We must also broaden our efforts to educate our organizations to see, understand and internalize that diversity is key to successful business outcomes. Diversity drives innovation, creative problem-solving and professional growth.”
Fili often shares that her overt mission is the advancement of women in nuclear power and says that she is proud to represent her industry and UUSA through this prestigious award.
