To mark its 10th year in business, Urenco Nuclear Stewardship, based on Urenco’s nuclear licensed site at Capenhurst in Cheshire, has donated £10,000 to charity.
Employees voted for 3rd World Hope to receive the donation. 3rd World Hope provides support to communities in Malawi and was founded by Shaun Williams, a former Urenco Nuclear Stewardship colleague. Shaun died in 2020 in a tragic accident whilst delivering goods in Malawi.
Jason Gradie, Managing Director of Urenco Nuclear Stewardship, said: “I joined the business in September and I was immediately struck by everyone’s strong sense of community, not only in terms of supporting each other at work, but also the desire to give back where we can. I am delighted that our employees have chosen to mark and celebrate our 10th anniversary by giving this donation to this amazing charity in recognition of the commitment of Shaun who gave so much of his time to support and help communities in Africa.”
Urenco Nuclear Stewardship (UNS) has been in operation since 2012. Its core expertise centres on waste management, decommissioning and long term storage of nuclear materials. It has a new waste handling facility and strong technical expertise in waste strategy, characterisation, packaging and transport.
The decommissioning business is one of three Urenco companies based on Urenco’s UK site in Capenhurst alongside its uranium enrichment plants and its deconversion facility employing 1,000 people across the site altogether.
Urenco Nuclear Stewardship has successfully managed and delivered in excess of £200M of decommissioning activities for the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) during the last 10 years and currently stores an estimated 85% of the UK inventory of uranium on behalf of the NDA and has a contract with the Ministry of Defence for storage of submarine reactor pressure vessels prior to disposal.
The business will continue to grow as a provider for the management, treatment and disposal of metallic waste from UK nuclear facilities. It will also provide and grow its internal decommissioning and waste management capability to support the Urenco business in the UK, Europe and in the USA.
