Urenco funds science community hub for children

03 September 2024

A dedicated STEM education site for young children is to open its doors in September, thanks to Urenco’s support.

It will give children between the ages of five and 10 the opportunity to explore topics such as water, technology, optics, acoustics and computer science.

The “research house”, which will be run by our social impact partner House of the Little Scientists, will be located in Gronau, not far from Urenco’s enrichment site in Germany.

Urenco volunteers have also helped organisers move into the house for their first workshops, starting this month.

The house is meant to encourage young people’s natural curiosity around science, technology, engineering and maths.

Previously, in the Borken District, the Stiftung “Kinder forschen” (Little Scientists Foundation) only had a base in Stadtlohn. This new facility in Gronau enables them to expand their reach in person, whilst encouraging essential skills. It happens to be Germany’s largest early childhood education initiative in the STEM field.

Social Impact Lead for Urenco, Rosie Salkeld, said: “House of the Little Scientists is a great way to introduce and excite children about science and other related subjects.

“Urenco is committed to nurturing the scientists and engineers of tomorrow, and our support will also enable a “research bus” to hit the road, visiting kindergartens and schools in the area to bring these topics to an even wider audience.”

Urenco’s Richie education materials will also form part of the science curriculum and be integrated at both the Foundation’s sites.

Niklas Schumacher, Project Manager for the research houses in Gronau and Stadtlohn said: "We are creating a space in which children can get excited about STEM subjects and sustainable development. Early childhood education is crucial for this to succeed.

“The research houses in Stadtlohn and Gronau can make a contribution to this and introduce children to these topics at an early age using the research-based learning method.

“Last but not least, this also helps to secure skilled workers in our region."
