On a snowy but sunny December day, 11 colleagues from Urenco’s Head Office swapped keyboards for spades to take part in a local volunteering activity at Woodoaks Farm in Hertfordshire. The group of employees set to work planting dozens of young trees including dogwood, hazel, beech, hawthorn and willow, with the help of Chiltern Rangers and Soil Association experts.
The farm has been donated by its owner to the Soil Association in order to transform the 300 acres of land into an organic farm. This involves planting trees, extending the forest and replanting the long-gone hedgerows so that nature and biodiversity can flourish. The farm’s 16th century black barn will also be renovated to become a shared social space at the heart of the local community.
Urenco’s team effort was complemented with a charity donation to the Soil Association. Rose Lewis from the Association said: “Please thank everyone for the extraordinary effort and for their sense of fun, laughter and spirit. We can't thank you enough for your people power, but also for the donation. We would love to see Team Urenco return next year so you can see how your hedges have grown. It's brilliant that you got to play such an integral part in the farm's regeneration programme".
Investment in our local communities through volunteering and financial support is key to Urenco’s Sustainability Strategy. We are proud to be involved in local environmental initiatives such as these, which help our communities to regenerate vital ecosystems that can play a role in increasing biodiversity and achieving our collective climate goals.
