Top performance from Capenhurst Apprentices

Shining a spotlight on the achievements of its apprentices and its science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) programme, Urenco, based at Capenhurst, announced that Lauren O’Connor, aged 25 from Ellesmere Port, a Process Apprentice with Urenco UK, is this year’s Apprentice of the Year.
The award was made at a graduation ceremony held earlier this month attended by her fellow apprentices and managers from the company.
Lauren is one of 12 apprentices at Capenhurst who have successfully graduated this year from two four-year apprenticeship schemes run by UUK and UNS at Capenhurst. Lauren won the award after demonstrating her commitment and passion for learning as well as her outstanding and consistent performance at work.
Lauren said: “I have really enjoyed the apprenticeship programme at Urenco. For me, it has the right mix of learning provided by Training Tomorrow’s Engineers (TTE) whilst carrying out practical tasks and undertaking challenges at work and I would highly recommend this to people who want to do this type of vocational training. I can’t thank the team at Urenco enough to their support and help over the last four years and I’m absolutely over the moon to get the Apprentice of the Year 2019 award.”
All 12 apprentices have gained their BTEC, NVQ level 3 and their HNC. Their achievements are the culmination of four years hard work with all demonstrating a high level of commitment and performance during their time at Urenco.

As a senior leader who started their career through a nuclear apprenticeship scheme, I am a great advocate of vocational training and the career foundation it provides for our future generations.
Apprentices who enter our schemes, quite often but not exclusively at a very young age, are encouraged to develop many skills including life-skills and gain a sound knowledge about the work we undertake on the Site whilst consolidating their learning through their TTE courses. Including the 12 Graduate Apprentices, Urenco UK (UUK), Urenco Nuclear Stewardship (UNS) and Urenco ChemPlants (UCP) currently have 24 apprentices based on site working on the four year scheme in a number of different roles. The scheme, which has been in place for a number of years, has proved very popular with students who have chosen to follow a vocational practical training path rather than go to college full-time.
