Urenco employee receives third prize in ‘Spark’ energy contest

05 July 2018

Paul Gavin, an engineer at Urenco UK achieved third place in a British-Franco competition, ‘Spark’, which aims to foster a community of leaders in the energy sector.

Spark is a writing contest inviting current and former students of higher education in the UK and France to present innovative and novel thinking to contemporary energy challenges. In just 500 words, Paul and his university friend Sam Park from EDF Energy, answered the question: ‘What is the role of nuclear technology in a world of growing alternative power and digital innovation’.

The submission was shortlisted and both Paul and Sam were invited to take part in the World Nuclear Exhibition in Paris on 28 June, where the winners were announced.

Paul commented:

"Gaining third place in the contest was fantastic and it was a privilege to represent Urenco at an international event. I enjoyed working with Sam, as we were able to utilise both our skills and experience to enhance our entry.

‘Throughout the competition, I had the opportunity to speak with leaders from global organisations including EDF Energy, Rolls Royce and EY, on the role of nuclear energy in the future and how we can work together to ensure the long term sustainability of our industry.

‘I would recommend the contest to anyone looking to develop their career in the nuclear industry."

Laurent Odeh, Executive Director of New Business at Urenco said:

‘"Congratulations to Paul and Sam on achieving third place in the Spark contest. I was invited to take part in the awards ceremony in Paris, my home capital city, and felt incredibly proud that a Urenco employee demonstrated the innovative thinking required to be successful amongst a highly competitive field of entrants.

‘Urenco’s success relies on its people. In this respect we want to attract and retain exceptional talent to our business. Competitions of this nature provide an international stage from which to showcase both our people and the company as innovative and key leaders in our sector."
