Deep in the Gran Sasso mountains in Italy, research is taking place on very small, elementary parts called neutrinos.
To be able to do this research, scientists require Selenium82, which is a stable isotope produced by Urenco Nederland.
Head of Urenco Stable Isotopes, Arjan Bos, and his colleague, Peter Groen, visited the unique ‘Laboratori Nazionale del Gran Sasso’ (LNGS) to see Selenium82 in action.
LNGS consists of three corridors of almost 20 metres high and 100 metres tall, deeply carved into the mountain. One of the most impressive experiments in the lab is ‘OPERA’ which is built of 150,000 units lead with a total weight of 1,300 tonnes.
