Read our latest reportUrenco has been confirmed as a member of the new Net Zero Nuclear (NZN) coalition at a signing ceremony in Barakah, Abu Dhabi.
The signing took place during CEO Boris Schucht’s visit to the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant this week, where he met Urenco’s long-term customer, the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC).
ENEC is also a founding member of NZN, which is an initiative calling for collaboration among governments, industry leaders and civil society to triple global nuclear capacity to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.
Boris put pen to paper alongside His Excellency Mohamed Ibrahim Al Hammadi, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of ENEC.
It comes as the United Arab Emirates (UAE) prepares to host COP28 this year, with industry partners coming together to support NZN in the lead up to the climate-change conference.
Urenco also plans to attend COP28 as nuclear continues to gain recognition as part of the solution to reaching net zero emissions worldwide.
Urenco is one of ENEC’s nuclear fuel suppliers, providing a diverse and reliable supply of enrichment services from its European enrichment facilities for the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant, which provides nearly 25 percent of the UAE’s electricity needs and became commercially active in 2021.
Boris said: “The world needs a secure, sustainable net zero future.
“For this to happen, nuclear must play a significant role in the clean-energy transition alongside renewables, with the backing and resolve of governments, industry and the supply chain.
“Urenco is committed to delivering for a net zero world and stands proudly with ENEC, the World Nuclear Association (WNA) and other organisations supporting Net Zero Nuclear as we advance towards COP28.”
