Urenco has taken part in two high-profile events on the future of the nuclear fuel supply chain which has seen governments affirming their commitment to the carbon-free energy source to help meet climate targets.
On September 29, our CEO Boris Schucht and Head of Government Affairs, Emilie Isaacs attended the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) and Ministry of Energy Transition of France’s joint event in Paris, Roadmaps to New Nuclear.
Boris spoke on an industry panel concerning the importance of securing the nuclear fuel cycle now and into the future, alongside Cameco, Centrus and Orano.
Boris made the point that to support investment in new nuclear capacity, governments needed to give long-term guidance to the markets, so that investment decisions could be made.
The event saw energy ministers from 20 countries issue a statement committing to nuclear energy to help achieve their net zero emission targets, as well as on guiding principles to increase momentum on projects.
Separately, nine nuclear industry associations signed a joint statement setting out their willingness to work with policymakers to “rebuild leadership in nuclear energy” globally, and enhancing their cooperation around climate targets. Meetings with customers, who also attended the conference, were a key part of the program.
Meanwhile, at the IAEA General Conference in Vienna on September 27, we chaired and participated in a side-panel event hosted by the UK Government, and organised and chaired by Urenco on advanced fuels.
Urenco’s Head of Technical Sales, Magnus Mori chaired while Site Security and Safeguards Manager Phil Strapp joined panellists including the US Office of Nuclear Energy’s Dr. Katy Huff and the UK Department for Energy Security and Net Zero’s (DESNZ) Chris Heffer.
The panel examined the emerging demand and capacity concerning advanced fuel production as well as the challenges and opportunities it presents to the sector.
