Urenco participates in NIA Hydrogen Roadmap webinar

26 March 2021 Global News

Urenco’s Group Business Development Director, Harro Blokhuis, participated in the NIA’s Hydrogen Roadmap webinar this week.

Urenco’s Group Business Development Director, Harro Blokhuis, participated in the NIA’s Hydrogen Roadmap webinar this week.

The webinar built on the NIA’s Hydrogen Roadmap, which was published in February and endorsed by the Nuclear Industry Council.

The Roadmap features an ambition for nuclear to produce up to one-third of the UK’s clean hydrogen by 2050, and outlines how nuclear reactors of all types can contribute to this.

On behalf of Urenco and U-Battery, Harro discussed the key role nuclear can play in meeting decarbonisation goals, including through the production of hydrogen. He was joined in the debate by: Tom Greatrex, Chief Executive, NIA; Julia Pyke, Director of Financing, Sizewell C; Tom Samson, Interim CEO, UK SMR Consortium and Fiona Rayment OBE, Chief Science and Technology Officer, National Nuclear Laboratory.

Harro said: “Urenco feels strongly that nuclear power perfectly complements energy generated from renewables in a net zero world and the uses of hydrogen for the decarbonisation of several sectors.

“We were pleased to see the recognition of the key part nuclear can play in several countries’ policies and initiatives in 2020, including the UK Government’s 10 Point Plan for net zero transition, announced in November, and subsequently in the Energy White Paper. This included the UK Government aiming for 5GW of hydrogen production by 2030, backed by a new £240m net zero Hydrogen Fund.

“Urenco hopes to play a valuable role in this through our core uranium enrichment work to fuel nuclear reactors, both current and advanced nuclear technologies. We are also involved in the design and development of U-Battery, an Advanced Modular Reactor which can support the production of clean hydrogen and contribute to the wider deployment of hydrogen applications, such as transport, heating and heavy industry.”
