Urenco commits to net-zero carbon emissions in advance of 2040

On Earth Day, Urenco is pleased to announce its commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions in advance of 2040 as part of the Climate Pledge (partner organisation of the UN’s Race to Zero Campaign). We are proud to have committed to achieving net-zero 10 years ahead of the UK’s Net-Zero by 2050 target, and therefore playing our part in achieving the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement.
We are also proud to have joined more than 100 other companies who have signed up to The Climate Pledge. This will involve:
- Measuring and reporting on greenhouse gas emissions on a regular basis.
- Implementing decarbonisation strategies in line with the targets of the Paris Agreement, including efficiency improvements, using more renewable energy, reducing materials usage and other carbon emission elimination strategies.
- Taking actions to neutralise any remaining emissions with additional, quantifiable, real, permanent, and socially beneficial offsets to achieve net zero annual carbon emissions before 2040.
This commitment is a key element of Urenco’s refreshed Sustainability Strategy, which will be communicated in our Sustainability Report in the summer, and it is a further demonstration that sustainability is firmly embedded within Urenco as one of our core values.
From the valuable contribution we make to the low carbon economy, to the socially responsible way we conduct our business, sustainability shapes our customer partnerships and guides our decision-making at all levels.
Boris Schucht, Urenco’s Chief Executive Officer, said: “We believe that nuclear power should and can play an important role in the clean energy transition. Achieving a sustainable energy system and meeting ambitious climate targets will be much harder without existing nuclear power and investment in new nuclear. We are supporting this through our production of fuel for carbon-free electricity generation, and we are also strongly committed to reducing our own carbon emissions through our membership and participation in The Climate Pledge."
