Talking net zero at the Urenco sponsored WNA Strategic eForum

26 October 2021

Urenco’s Head of Sales, Kirk Schnoebelen, spoke at the World Nuclear Association (WNA) Strategic eForum ‘Committing to Net Zero’ today, where attendees discussed key net zero goals for the nuclear industry.

The growing global consensus on the need to significantly and urgently reduce CO2 emissions will soon be addressed by world leaders at the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) in the UK. With many countries and businesses now setting net zero targets, some less than 30 years from now, we believe that nuclear power can and should play an important role in the clean energy transition.

The WNA event, which Urenco sponsored, covered significant questions for the nuclear industry, such as ‘What can nuclear technologies contribute to achieving net zero?’ and ‘What are nuclear companies going to do to address their own greenhouse gas emissions?’.

Kirk Schnoebelen said: “We will need all available CO2 free alternatives to achieve net zero – renewables and nuclear. For nuclear to play its part will require the development of future reactor designs and advanced fuels, innovations that Urenco is currently supporting.

“To be credible in the net zero debate, nuclear companies must be strongly committed to reducing their own carbon emissions. Urenco is already working towards ambitious sustainability goals and we have committed to achieving net zero carbon emissions within our own operations in advance of 2040 through joining The Climate Pledge.”
