Richie Lecture wows students with green magic

02 December 2021 Global News

On Wednesday 1 December Urenco’s Richie Lecture returned for its seventh year at the Science Museum.

On Wednesday 1 December, Urenco’s Richie Lecture returned for its seventh year to Wonderlab: The Equinor Gallery at the Science Museum.

This year’s lecture, called ‘Green Magic’, focused on the environmental challenges we face with a spotlight on the climate change crisis. The theme was explored through a magic performance by our guest speaker Megan Swann, President of the Magic Circle. Students discovered what climate change is, why it is a problem and how we can help protect our planet from its devastating effects.

The event also featured an opportunity for students to explore Wonderlab: The Equinor Gallery.

This year’s Richie lecture was designed to get students engaged and excited in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) through Megan’s interactive and exciting magic performance as well as linking to a topical subject. Getting young people engaged with STEM is important as it helps raise awareness of the opportunities and jobs in this critical area and Urenco is committed to helping inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers.

Robert Little, Urenco’s Sustainability Manager, comments: “Urenco’s Richie programme is all about engaging young people and encouraging them to pursue a career in STEM. I’m delighted we could work with such a distinguished and engaging presenter  as Megan, to showcase how important it is to take steps to reduce our impact on the planet, using the wonders of magic. Solving the world’s most difficult challenges will need the scientists, mathematicians and engineers of the future and I’m sure the lecture will spark an interest in these subjects.”
