A closer look at disabilities

06 October 2021

In Urenco’s recent inclusion and diversity (I&D) survey, 45 colleagues (5%) identified as having a long-term condition or impairment.

We will be focussing on disabilities across all our sites as the main I&D theme for quarter four. Our quarterly I&D themes are intended to increase awareness, understanding and encourage conversations so we can learn together with the aim of minimising any stigma and accepting that we’re all different.

Not all disabilities are visible or immediately apparent, such as mental illness, chronic pain or fatigue, sight or hearing impairments, diabetes, brain injuries, neurological disorders, learning differences and cognitive dysfunctions, among others.

According to the WHO World Report on Disability, 15 per cent of the world’s population, or more than one billion people, are living with disability. Of this number, it’s estimated that 450 million are living with a mental or neurological condition - and two-thirds of these people will not seek professional medical help, largely due to stigma, discrimination and neglect.

This is something we are keen to better understand and ensure our employees are well supported and we are looking forward to a series of engaging and constructive interactions during the rest of the year.
