Urenco highlights complementary role of hydrogen and nuclear in reaching Net Zero

24 June 2020

Urenco has contributed to a new independent report, which shows that hydrogen can meet up to half of Great Britain’s final energy demand by 2050 while helping to reach ambitious Net Zero targets, and that nuclear has an important role in this.

The report, published by Aurora Energy Research today, states that all Net Zero scenarios require substantial growth in low-carbon generation, such as nuclear and renewables.

David Fletcher, Head of Business Development , said “Urenco is pleased to have participated in workshops and contributed to the findings of this comprehensive study.

“The near-term challenge for the nuclear industry is to present an integrated strategy that will drive policy decisions towards investment in advanced and small reactors, such as U-Battery – a reactor Urenco is working with a consortium of partners to develop - and the associated fuel supply. These advanced reactors can be optimised and deployed specifically for hydrogen production as part of a distributed, de-centralised network of reactors. Urenco is taking a leading role in the UK nuclear industry towards achieving this goal.”
