A Urenco nuclear expert has helped coach some of the industry’s future leaders at the World Nuclear University’s (WNU) Summer Institute.
Paul Lorskulsint, Chief Nuclear Officer at Urenco USA, has returned from the course in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, having helped deliver three sessions to the 70 nuclear professionals taking part in 2024.
Paul, who is based at Urenco’s New Mexico site in Eunice, was invited alongside other leading nuclear experts from around the world to develop the students’ leadership capabilities.
The institute is aimed at a mixture of managers, researchers, operators, regulators and academics in the nuclear industry.
Paul said: “It was great to be a part of the institute this year and witness the drive and enthusiasm of the students who travel from all over the globe to be there.
“To be asked to come back again and help deliver another one of their programmes was positive feedback for me personally, so I’m very honoured.
“At Urenco, we’re committed to nurturing the next generation of scientists and engineers and helping them progress in their careers.”
Paul took part in a panel discussion on the current state of the front-end of the nuclear fuel cycle, alongside suppliers from the mining, conversion and fabrication sectors.
Separately, he delivered a lecture on advanced reactors and the importance of both low enriched uranium plus (LEU+) and high-assay, low enriched uranium (HALEU) fuel for the future.
Paul outlined Urenco’s position on supplying the next generation of reactors, with plans for an advanced fuels capability in both the UK and the USA. Urenco has already begun a project to build a facility at its UK site, having received funding from the Government earlier this year. Meanwhile, it is in regular contact with the Department of Energy (DoE) in the US concerning its programme.
Finally, Paul took part in a leaders’ session where students were advised on how to grow their careers and develop as professionals. He emphasised communication skills and the importance in nuclear of “truly knowing your audience” at every interaction, given the varying degrees of expertise and roles in nuclear energy.
The institute lasts around five weeks and the students were handed diplomas at the end of the intensive course.
